The answer to this question will depend on the area you live in. Generally speaking, it can take anywhere from 6-24 months to complete firefighter training. Here are some of the potential requirements for becoming a firefighter:
- A high school diploma or GED certificate
- EMT certification, which can take about six months to complete
- Additional paramedic training which can take 1 or 2 years
- Some firefighters have an associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science, which takes 2 to 4 years to complete, respectively
- You will need to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Training from a fire department can take about 18 months
