How Long Does It Take To Become A Firefighter?

Firefighters have one of the most important jobs in society. They can mean the difference between life and death when emergencies happen. If you have ever thought about becoming a career or volunteer firefighter, you might be wondering what the process is.

As a former Raleigh NC firefighter, Keith Sanders always knew he wanted to be a firefighter and help his community. Read on to learn more about how long it takes to become a firefighter.

The answer to this question will depend on the area you live in. Generally speaking, it can take anywhere from 6-24 months to complete firefighter training. Here are some of the potential requirements for becoming a firefighter:

  • A high school diploma or GED certificate
  • EMT certification, which can take about six months to complete
  • Additional paramedic training which can take 1 or 2 years
  • Some firefighters have an associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science, which takes 2 to 4 years to complete, respectively
  • You will need to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
  • Training from a fire department can take about 18 months
